Jack Bauer is not his brother's keeper; State of the Union (SOTU)

Wow. Plenty to discuss.
On 24 we see that the Bauer Family is really effed up.

On Heroes we meet The Invisible Man and learn a little about the history of one of the weird insignias.

Studio 60 is back and I am realizing that my favorite characters on the show aren't the leads. I like the corporate heads and the 2nd banana writers alot more than Chandler and Josh (I mean Danny Tripp and the other guy, I'm not sure which is which but the Josh character really wants a Stalker nickname).

What else was on last night?

As for tonight the President's big SOTU will be wiping out most networks so the only shows my dvr will be taping are Veronica Mars and The Bad Girl's Club (it's on the Oxygen network and it's great television).

So uh...talk away...

Oh yeah and I guess Oscar nominations came out...

Josh, er, I mean Danny Tripp...why do I not like that last name...made me feel better about any past relationships where I may have attempted to reconcile with an ex, because at leasts they were 'exes' and I know I didn't call them that much. Unfortunately I fell asleep during the show around 10:45 p.m. and don't have DVR so I don't know how Simon and the new writer worked things out. Is the british chick the same blonde from 'Shawn of the Dead'?Which if you have not seen you should.
Didn't the President just give a speech just last week or something? What do I know, I only WORK in politics. Thank goodness for HBO, CINEMAX, and SHOWTIME.

I kind of thought 24 was a little soap opera-y last night.

I guess you have to slow it down a bit after the season premire event, but family tension is so Married with Children.

Now, the bombshell that dropped was obviously that the fellow who was pulling the strings last season is Jack's brother, that was thrilling, but if this was your first season of 24, it's kind of insulting that the thriller this week requires that you had seen a prior season, and just Yesterday Josephus was saying that you didn't need that kind of background. I hate when shit makes my homies having had lied.

While I was waiting for 24 to kick off, i caught O'Reily on COlbert again. Good stuff.

I also saw a good Spongebob Squarepants where SB and Squidward organized their labor and led a strike for workers rights. Jo would have been so proud.

Living in DC it's usually Hype to have a State of The Union Party with drinking games and scepticism, but I don't think I'll be able to watch since I have swim practice tonight and won't get home in time. I was kind of interested in what that douchebag would say and who the specially chosen everyday people would be... The mother of that marine who just got the Medal of Honor (posthumasly)? A child who was not aborted? A private serving in Iraq? NY Firefighter? Santa Claus? With No Katrina this past year, that shoots down the disaster survivor possibility.

Yeah helio, the whole Bauer brother reveal made a liar out of me. But I'm glad actor Paul McCrane is still working (Mr. McCrane starred in the movie version of Fame and most recently on ER. Plus he had a cameo in Rocky 2. A special Jo prize to the first one who can identify his character in that film).

For the uninitiated 24 viewer, Jack's brother is indeed, as helio said, the man behind the curtain last season. He was running the operation that killed the previous President Palmer and that eventually got Jack thrown in a Chinese prison (I was going to say Turkish prison). We the viewers had no idea and were given no hints that he was Jack's brother.

Now it seems that we will learn that their mutual animosity stems from their involvement with Brother Bauer's wife played by Rena Sofer, and I assume we will find out that the boy is Jack's son. I also can't wait to see Jack's Dad played by the Farmer from Babe who has to be one of the hardest working men in show business.

Let's also revisit the fact that Jack's brother was pulling Robocop's strings in 2006. Peter weller was Bireko, was he not?

And I prefer to think of Jack's father as Mr. Skolnick. Lewis' father in Revenge of the Nerds

Yes! The farmer from Babe...I knew that guy's credits included some amazing film work. I agree on the 24 being a little soap opera-y...we knew very little about Jack outside of CTU and I think that's how everyone likes it.

As for Studio 60...it was good, but also not as enjoyable as I've found most episodes.

Also watched Prison Break last night...would someone please kill all these people so I can stop watching that show??

At 10:36 AM, Blogger Heliocentric said...

Mau, in a crossover universe, you can simply imagine that the prison breakers were killed in the nukular bomb in LA on 24. Or you'll have to wait for a week or so when they "try to get to the President" Then they'll have to deal with Jack Bauer and CTU.

Hmm...imagining a crossover universe might make the show more enjoyable. I could also drink everytime someone gets shot or one of the convicts does something stupid that puts them in danger for the 999,999th time.

Oh snap!

The New DC Mayor will be at the State of the Union address tonight, but he turned down the President's invitation to sit in the VIP box. Instead he's going on the Speaker's invite.

In your face. That's some good TV drama.

Am I the only one around here that is happy that Scott Bakula is back on TV in Enterprise re-runs?

how i do love 24. but now thinking back on it, it was a rather slow episode... jack saves a guy from a helicopter, assad comes in, jack's brother is his antithesis. did i miss anything?

ugh.. hero's was also a bit first-show-of-the-seasony, but i really am digging the Hiro character. he makes me constantly laugh out loud.

speaking of that which i will not abbreviate, did anyone see "how i met your mother" (or your mom as it is known among my close friends). It is really fucking funny... and i wasn't a "friends" fan at all. the main character had to fire his boss (who was the guy from malcom) and there was some nude painting involved. god it was funny.

I suppose I should watch an episode of This How I met... business.

In Robocop I think it was Paul McCrane who screams "I LIKE IT!" when he is supplied with a state of the art weapon. But I don't think you would refer to him as th eone who was pulling Robocops strings, he was just one of the bad guys following the Dad from That 70's Show's lead.

A fellow Blogger, Manny (don't know who this guy is and his blog is kind of simple with hot famous chicks and nipple slips, but he often has good link dumps) compiled a list of the Top 9 bad ass fictional characters

At 12:02 PM, Blogger Heliocentric said...

I wanted Jack Bauer to be on that list, but it turns out I was wrong. I did however know that Red Foreman was on the list.

At 12:18 PM, Blogger Josephus said...

I like the list. Obviously Jack needs to be on it. And Jet Li's character in kiss of the dragon. When he walks into that Police Karate class and kicks ass.

I'm super psyched for Veronica Mars tonight!!! One question, though: does the fact that I am considering watching VM and only flipping over to the SOTU during the commercial breaks make me a bad citizen? Am I what's wrong with this country?

At 12:33 PM, Blogger Mau said...

definitely nothing wrong with only watching the SOTU on commercial breaks...that's what the daily show and colbert report are for!

At 12:40 PM, Blogger Josephus said...

I think I will watch the SOTU on my "live" channel and skip to the taping version of Veronica intermittently.

Bad Girls Club at 10:00...

I've never seen Veronica Mars...is it similar to anything else I may have caught? Will I have any idea what's going on if I see it tonight?

How does one describe Veronica Mars...uh...Nancy Drew for the 21st Century?

Jordan and the dude from Wings are my favorite characters on Studio 60.

At 1:40 PM, Blogger Mau said...

Hmm...I'll have to check out this new Nancy Drew.

Yay Wings...I think I'd like any show that reminded me of my time spent with those crazy Hackett brothers...

Too... much...24... talk.

Anyway, I watched Heroes and the beginning of Studio 60 at the gym. Then I went home and passed out. I have a lot on my DVR to catch up with. I still don't love Heroes, but I'm interested enough for the time being.

Tonight is Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, SOTU and Dirt. I will probably watch GG at the gym, and try to get home in time for the SOTU, and watch VM afterwards.

Mau--If a cross between Buffy (minus vampires) and film noir also sounds appealing to you, you'll probably enjoy VM. Tonight is a good night to join in--they just wrapped up a multi-episode mystery arc and are about to start a new one tonight.

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Mau said...

Okay, sounds good...I figure I'd go through TV withdrawl after last night if I don't come up with some good stuff tonight, so it's a perfect time to check out VM.

Oh man!!! I completely forgot to check this yesterday! And today until about 20 minutes ago!

So much to catch up on! Yes, Jack Bauer is the craziest mofo in the western world. And while I can understand new viewers being annoyed at the tie-in from last season, I'm kind of happy that for once they seem to be tying up loose ends . . . remember hot british Saunders from season 3? What happened to him? And the bad guy on the boat at the end of season 1? I keep waiting for these guys to come back. Ach - and I was so hoping Jack's dad would be Donald Sutherland! How awesome would that have been! Ah well. I love Babe, so I will be happy with James Cromwell as well. He does bad so good (see LA Confidential, the Queen).

I don't know if I'll bother watching SOTU speech. It's all political propoganda anyway. I get so bored with it. I think I'll do yoga instead. There, I said it. I guess I'd better actually do it. And then I'll watch tv. Probably last week's 30 Rock.

I can't stand Harriet on Studio 60. And yes, Lucy is that chick from Shaun of the Dead and also the original British Office! And also the Fashion TV announcer on Ugly Betty! Girl has been getting around! I love her!

Thank you Liz Turtle for finally being the person who answered my original question this morning.

Jack seems to kill a lot of people in one day doesn't he on 24?

Television tonight. American Idol...it's a guilty pleasure for me this early in the game. Watching these people who have no singing talent argue that they really do is delicious. Have you noticed that the worse a singer a person is the less in touch with reality they seem to be?

Thanks Randy. The parliment in my brain has officially argued it out and I'm part of your blogging world. Why didn't we do this when Deadwood was running. I had really cool shit to say then. Ah well, Rome will have to do for now. I figure in three years when the Sopranos is back on the air I can let loose then too. Thanks Bro!!

At 5:02 PM, Blogger LizTurtle said...

You're welcome, Bunn! And yes!!! God, I love the American Idol first coupla rounds . . . . Maybe I will watch that in lieu of hearing about our country's future.

Jack has increasing numeric OCD. He has to kill at least one more person today than he did yesterday. He's at how many now? Eh, I've lost count. I think he's killed more people today than he's saved, though. Seriously, what was this that helicopter? It looked like something you'd see on a ride at Disney.

At 5:11 PM, Blogger Josephus said...

Bunn, I don't know who this "Randy" person you speak of is...

My name is "Jo" or "Josephus" or the "Czar" if you're nasty.
