Madame Speaker, Dikembe & Baby Einsteins
Those are three things you missed if you didn't tune in for President Bush's 7th State of the Union last night.
On Veronica Mars we were treated to a Monkey hunt.
On Dirt, for the few minutes I tuned in I saw a pregnant ghost having sex with a schizophrenic.
And on Bad Girls Club we learned that even bad girls have feelings.
What did you watch last night and what's on tap for tonight?

Last night I watched Gilmore Girls while occasionally flipping over to Idol, and then watched Veronica Mars and flipped to the SOTU during the commercials. VM was definitely the stand-out. A solid episode w/ a good stand-alone mystery and fun time w/ my girl Mac. I'm not really sure I give a rat's ass about who killed the dean, though. Anyone try VM for the first time? (Mau?) If so, what did you think.
For tonight, a new episode of Friday Night Lights. I repeat, A NEW EPISODE OF FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!!! I'm a little excited, if you couldn't tell. Seriously, this show is amazing. It's about so much more than football. The inter-personal dramas are engrossing, without becoming soap-opera-y and melodramatic. And it makes me cry, almost every week. Which is as shocking as Your Mom making me laugh out loud. Because just like I don't laugh out loud alone, I almost never cry over two-dimensional people (and not just "choked up". We're talking actual tears). And I don't feel manipulated by the producers when they get me to cry. And I do also smile a lot, even chuckle. The show is just exceedingly real. (And Kyle Chandler's hot). And no one watches. So please watch! And if you happen to be a Nielsen house, I'll bake you cookies or something.
Watched my regular shows in syndication. Simpsons; Santa's lil' helper gets sick and the family has to make economic adjustments to support an operation. Seinfeld; George is offered a date with Marissa Tome, and Jerry buys his dad a Cadilac.
Watched the State of the Union, boring... of course, but that guy never ceases to amaze me. How the fuck did he get his job, and I don't even have one?
Then TV for the night was over, but the new 52 inch did not turn off.
First, me and the Leutentant watched the movie Idocracy. Oh my god, what a great movie. Mike Judge at his finest. If you haven't heard of it, check the IMDB.com, if you haven't seen it, treat yourself to a viewing. Then we watched M3 (Man, Moment, Machine) on the History Channel. The topic was Alexander the Great the Seige of Tyree and the torsion Catapult. Good show.
Then we wasted several hours playing Halo 2. Man that's an awesome use of the new TV.
caught glimore girls and wasn't nearly as humored as normal. then watched the first 20 minutes or so of VM (for the first time ever). I really tried but i don't think the show was for me. it kinda reminded me of saved by the bell with hotter people. i don't know what it was.
then watched sotu and without official rules decided that drinking evertime they clapped was a horrible horrible idea. so we changed it to everytime pelosi made a funny face or something else.. i forget. did anyone see cheney sneak a cookie? how about pelosi mouth something to the effect of "good fucking luck" how about mccain's seizure? did anyone spot cruella deville or mrs. clause in the crowd?
it was a sad, sad tv night for m.
when does lost come back
oooh m got to respond before me...yes, gg, unfortunately i have to agree with him about VM. i think part of it may just be that i have a huge number of shows i watch every week now (god the number is way too pathetic to calculate) and the tv part of my brain can't handle any more characters and plots. maybe i will try again next week or some time down the line.
as for the rest of tv last night..."watched" most of the SOTU which meant i played on my computer while it was on. saw Gilmore Girls and an old Myth Busters, neither especially exciting. The best use of the tv last night was definitely my new Wii game, Elebits. God I love Wii....
M. I saw Mrs Claus in the crowd. I mean it's probably not too busy up north this time of year. The Elf labor is coming off of vacation and the fat man is probably just working off his bender, so why wouldn't she go.
Mau, I can't accept "an old Mythbusters" Ima need a description of the myths.
Well as I'm rebelling at work this week (my job is database craziness, but i've somehow been elected to plan this guy's retirement party and i'm kind of annoyed about that), i'll be more than happy to detail the myths for you, helio.
This episode was "MythBusters Revisited" from season 3. they redid quite a few myths - do you get wetter running or walking through rain (m and i were quite angry at this one beause the main reason they said they were doing it over was because last time they used a sprinkler system and the viewers wanted them to use real rain...we were pretty sure a uniform amount of water falling in the same way had been the best way to do it in the first place). they also did "do you get blown backwards when shot?" - BUSTED and one of the stupidest things i've ever seen someone do on a semi-respectable show--they were testing "Holding a large sheet of plywood will slow a fall from a building enough to make it survivable" and wanted to do it with a real person, but weren't going for a building. What's the logical, next best thing to do? Of course completly strap Tory to the back of a pickup truck while standing and holing a piece of plywood while Grant and Kari drive it at 50mph. I was positive the board was going to swing around and cut Tory's head/arms/legs off. Luckily he survived, but the myth was re-busted, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't worth the stunt.
there were a few other random myths...all in all, definitely not an especially good episode. I can't decide if I'm looking forward to the Underwater Car episode which is on tonight. As you can tell, I get scared for the people on the show quite easily and this one sounds dangerous!
Mau and M, you tried to like VM, that's all I ask of you.
I agree w/ y'all on your assessment of the Gilmore Girls. In fact, it's been less than stellar for a while now, but those crazy Gilmores are totally entrenched in my weekly schedule. I can't let go. I'm a sad, weak person, really.
Wow, Mau. Great summary. I was expecting something like: poprocks & coke, killer kleenex, and swing all the way around. You took it to the next level.
wow mau, you're a nerd
I love Mythbusters.
Last night I watched American Idol & saw a guy name 'Sundance', which made me think of Helio. Just because of the name. Although, if Helio could sing the blues with a powerful voice, then there would be one more thing to remind me. There were also multiple oddballs, etc. Enjoyable as usual.
Then I watched part of SOTU while I was cleaning my kitchen up a little bit. Then my dvr came on & wouldn't allow me to watch SOTU (taping Dirt & Bad Girls Club). I'm behind on both of those shows, so I watched Grey's Anatomy from 2 weeks ago, so now I get why George was so upset that they killed his dad. Although I might have to watch this week's again just to get stuff straight. Did anyone notice Ann from Arrested Development! She was bent over at a 90 degree angle & had megaloads of attitude. She was awesome.
Then I went to bed & watched the 11:00 news.
Mau, your avatar makes me want McD's for lunch. Too bad there's not one close. :-( But that's a thread for another blog . . . .
I missed most tv last night. I went shopping and then to the gym instead. Saw a good deal of the SOTU at the gym though, but missed the end on the drive home. Midway through I exchanged some texts with Jo from the locker room (thank God you can't swing a cat without hitting a flat screen at my gym) about Pelosi's botox and Cheney's "I'd rather be out practicing ovophagy" (shout out to Dirt, which I will get to in a moment). By the time I got home, I'd missed the end, and Webb's response (I hate that guy, but apparently the Commonwealth prefers sexists to racists).
The only of my DVR'd shows I watched was Dirt. Let me tell you what this means: I chose to watch one show from last night and chose Dirt over both Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls. This says something, as I love both of those, even though Lorelai has become a whiny bitch, not deserving of the glowing love of that wonderful, beautiful man, Christopher. Anyhoo, Dirt is fantastic.
I can see where it mightn't have hooked people from the get go, and some of the secondary characters are really, really flat. However, it's finding it's stride and I for one am completely enraptured. I love Courtney Cox as Evil Monica running her tabloid with an iron fist. And I love, love, love her schizo sidekick. Holy crap, he's awesome. I wasn't sure how they were going to top last week's episode (titled "Ovophagy" because Cox's character began her daily staff meeting with video of fetal sharks eating their siblings in utero), but this week's (titled "What to Expect When You're Expecting") featured the best birth scene I've ever witnessed on television. In fact, I promise you, I will never see a birth that will top it. I don't want to give too much away, but if you have the chance to catch it - you really, really should. The talking head in the jar wasn't too shabby either.
I also caught Bad Girls Club. Practice What You Preach, bitch.
Tonight, I have a hair appointment, so I likely won't make it home for Friday Night Lights, so I'll have to catch up on it later in the week. I think I also DVR Armed & Famous and Knights of Prosperity, though I've yet to watch an episode of either.
I clearly spend too much time outside of my home.
Oh yeah, I'm in for Friday Night Lights tonight. And whatever else I can fit in.
Tomorrow will be tragic - I agreed to babysit for my niece! On a Thursday! In a house that has no tv!!!! Well, I think they do have a crappy tv with crappy reception, but fuck that shit. I guess I'll knit. Or read. Like people used to do in the old days.
Tonight is Wednesday, so that means South Park... but it's not in season right now so I'v probably seen it.
I don't have a dvr or TiVo, but I used to own stock in Tivo and made bank when I sold it. I do ,however, use technology to aid my tv viewing. if I miss an episode of 24, I give steve Jobs $1.99 and download it from iTunes, and I totally use TVGuide.com all the time. In fact, I'm going there right now to see exactly which South Park is going to be on tonight.
LT--Bonus "favorite aunt" points for agreeing to babysit an infant (your niece is an infant, right) in a house w/o TV--I mean, it's not like she's going to be really entertaining.
Maybe you could listen to "A Prairie Home Companion" on NPR or something. Listening to tales of Lake Woebegone while knitting has a very "Once upon a time, before there were televisions..." feel to it.
no... dvr...
??
how do you live?
OK so the Classic episode of South Park tonight is the Jeffersons, which pimps on Michael Jackson and is hilarious. and the new episode is the Return of Chef, where they use clips of old voice work by Isaac Hayes to say shit like "I want to stick my balls inside your rectum Kyle" and "I wanna make love to the children". Again, good episode, much hilarious. You should DVR these shows Rockafeller
Oooh, that's the big revenge episode on Isaac Hayes, ya? I might have to tape that one! Hee hee - stupid scientologists.
That is a good idea GG. It's too bad they don't have a rocking chair & some lap blankets! Now that I think about it - nah, they must have a radio, at least.
all this talk of no tv's and no dvr's makes me sad...and in the mood for going out to buy some more electronics.
helio-i had plans for just a quick list of the myths and then was just too excited to be avoiding work. and m, YOU'RE a nerd! LT-sorry about causing hard to cure craving for McD's! I honestly love the little characters more than the food, but anything to eat from anywhere would make me happy at this point.
M, I live and die by the controler... Playstation, x-box, game cube and PSP. All in da house.
I suppose if I had a dvr, I'd watch more of the shit that interrupts my gaming on occasion, but it may interfere and the roomies would pounce on my Halo weakness. You got to keep your skills sharp, you never know if there's a Last Starfighter scenario out there and you may be called on to save the universe. All TV does is build looking skills
the last starfighter was on tv this weekend. i was soooo close to dvring it.. but then i realized that i probably wasn't actually going to get a chace to stop the Ko-Dan armada and even if i did.. well humans only get one death.
i highly suggest buying a wii. you haven't gamed until you've played a nose-picking game (wario: smooth moves).
The missus and I haven't missed an American Idol episode this season (a new record of 3 straight for us).
Tonight will be Idol followed by the first part of the Top Chef finale. I am taping Friday Night Lights (I am about 6 episodes behind) and Real World (or RR/RW challenge, whichever is on tonight).
I used to like Chopper, but then I realized they didn't really do anything but order parts, yell at somebody when the parts come late, put parts together, and there's always a time crunch because them assholes can't manage their time. Oh and all their bikes look the same. Long front fork, large wheel in the back, tank that 'really ties it all together'. Don't get me wrong, i used to really enjoy the show, but once I figured out the formula, i lost interest.
I tried to watch the sister show American Hot Rod, but them fuckers are always in a time crunch too. What is it with motorheads that they can't budget a few hours?
Ha ha, Helio! You might have ruined American Chopper for me! Eh, I only ever watch every now & then anyways. Like at my parents house when my little bro is down from the big apple.
Have you seen Ink? I've seen 2 episodes (maybe more? I forget - it was a marathon) & talk about not being able to budget your time! This one-legged girl came in & wanted some ink on her fake leg. So the guy's like yeah cool, give it to me, we'll have it back to in a week. Something like 8 weeks later he finally gave it back. And it kind of looked crappy, I thought. Like, I was expecting him to have decorated the whole thing in some kind of theme or whatever, like the guy's with full sleeves, but he had just drawn a bunch of random pictures that had no connection to each other. I would have been hella pissed if I'd been her.
why are the europeans so far ahead of us on the reality tv front...
if this ever comes to america i may watch an episode.

I do like mikey. He plays a bigger role than he used to... the writers probably gave him more lines because he apeals to the audience more.
I know he failed his driving test, well his motorcycle endorsement test. Is that why you see him rolling on a scooter in the new ads for the switch from TDC to TLC, 'cuz he ain't allowed to ride a big boy bike.
M, of course that show is on in Amsterdam, they're always smoking the Ganja, so TV folks can get away with more shit over there.
It took you long enough notwitty.
I quit on all the shows about 9 years ago and came back three years ago.
I'm not sure how anyone could make it all the way through.
Wow, m....that show sounds ridiculous...
I have watched every season of RW, except Key West. I even watched most of Philadelphia, and that one was just terrible.
I haven't really watched RR in years, at least not seriously; I probably was only serious about it for the first 3 or 4 seasons.
I've seen most of the Challenges.
But MTV doesn't just have me there. Oh, no - those bastards got me with Laguna Beach and the Hills, not to mention My Super Sweet Sixteen, and most recently that Maui show, which is terrible, yet I still watch on Saturday afternoons.
The programming people there are fucking geniuses because they hook you with marathons, or even back to back eps on Saturdays. Fuckers.
yay for my super sweet 16! that is definitely my secret guilty pleasure...and completely ridiculous. as i've been planning this retirement party this week, i keep thinking how i should be calling famous rappers or circus performers because both are quite necessary for a party!
You should have the retiree come in on a chaise carried by Chippendale's dancers, and provide him with his own spotlight dance routine, and multiple outfit changes.
Oooh...Chippendale's dancers. Good idea. I'm also thinking a giant ice sculpture of him with penguins dancing to our company's fight song around it.
your company has a fight song?
Haha, yes...my company absolutely has a fight song. M would be glad to sing it for you some day. I never knew such a thing existed and then in what MUST have been some kind of bizarre "tv meets my reality--you're actually in an episode of The Office and it sounds like it's a good thing, but it's NOT" circle of hell, I was made to first listen to a 60 year old man sing the song by himself (the guy i'm planning the retirement party for) and then to sing along with the rest of my department. this is apparently how we spend our department meetings...it was the single most crazy crazy crazy thing i have experienced since joining corporate america 2 years ago.
