When there's nothing on TV

I watch old tv series

At the suggestion of a friend named juicy, I watched the first season of HBO’s “Rome” this weekend. It was so good and I think you will like it too..

Well you’ll like it if you are into uncessary gore, nudity and character development. If you like history than you don’t even need to enjoy all three of the previously mentioned sale points.

So this made me wonder (wonder, little star) what other series I’m missing? Any suggestions of series that are amazing but maybe short lived?

Here is my must watch list:
The Shield (season six just started, but watch it from the beginning)
*Centers around a small task force of cops outside of LA. They are kinda dirty cops and kinda noble and do some pretty f’d up shit to get the job done. Amazing acting and the camera work is just unbelievable.
Rescue Me (start from the beginning)
*Denis Leary’s series about a recovering alcoholic, irish, firefighter (surprise) in NYC. It swings between inner-child-beating depressing and unadulterated hilarity. Do not watch if you are a manic depressive
Arrested Development (watch it at least 2x)
*The “normal” son comes back to rescue his family’s failing real estate business. The funniest show ever on TV. (includes david cross)
Nip Tuck (I’m sure we’ve all seen these)
*Plastic Surgeons in Miami Beach (?) that love making people look sexy and sexing up the same people. I used to watch this because it made me feel better about my dysfunctional relationships.
Firefly (you don’t have to be into scifi to enjoy it.. really.. I swear)
*Space travel + Pirates + Evil Big brother + sexy. It kinda reminds me of if there was a comedic series about Han Solo. Not necessarily a comedy but it’s pretty funny for the genre.

Man, there are a lot of good shows I haven't seen. I didn't watch the Shield b/c I didn't get FX in Bermuda, and now I'm 6 seasons behind. Holy crap!! I have Rome Season 1 on my Netflix list. Who knows when I'll actually get to that.

I'm with you Arrested Development and would add It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia to that list.

Ooooh LT, good call on Always Sunny. I'm a big fan of that show.

I've been enjoying the Shield...watched Seasons 1 and 2 so far and m has been downloading season 3 so I have more of an idea what's going on.

I think we've mentioned it on here before, but I'll say again that the mini series, The Lost Room, was quite good. I thought it wouldn't be for me, but it was highly entertaining.

The other shows I've been happy to come across during a lull in new TV were all from Showtime and HBO which I don't get. I've enjoyed Weeds, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Sopranos (first couple seasons MUCH more than the last few) and because I'm a very open and honest person, I'll admit that I own every season of Sex and the City. My roommates and I used to watch them ALL OF THE TIME...haven't seen an episode in quite a while, though....

I agree with M's list except for the Shield. But I particularly second his nomination of Firefly. May I also recommend two shows that I really discovered on DVD:
1. Sports Night--the Aaron Sorkin comedy (w/ a hint of drama) about the behind the scenes running of a 3rd rate Sports Center. This is what Studio 60 *should* have been.
2. Wonderfalls--about a slacker who works in a giftshop at Niagra Falls--the tschotskes talk to her and force her to do stuff, turning her into, in the show's words: "Fates butt monkey". The show had a huuuuge cheese potential, but is refreshingly sugar-free. Plus, the creators totally knew the show would never get picked up, so they wrapped most everything up in 13 episodes.
I own both DVD sets, and DC-ites are welcome to borrow.

i new i missed a bunch that i had been recently watching.. i second all that mau says.. especially weeds and dexter.

i think i may have seen one or two wonderfalls back in the day.. i vaguely remember there being a show based out of niagra falls (excited all us upstaters) where the girl talked to a monkey (that only she could see?).

we watched a bit of sports night a while ago.. i remember hating the fact that they had a laugh track on a dramady.. it was like if studio 60 had a laugh track (btw.. i liked (surprisingly) studio 60.

there is a new "Your Mom" tonight as well as "The Riches"

Sports Night had a laugh track?? Wow, I don't remember that at all. I really got into that show, like halfway through the first season b/c my friend kept talking about it. And then I was really into it 2nd season & super-bummed they didn't keep going. Especially b/c I really really hated what Peter Krauss' character became on 6 Feet Under. Such a raging asshole! Aw, I miss Sports Night. Maybe I'll Netflix that one, too.
